World Cup Progress

June 20, 2010, by Bojan

The opening credits to the show that was billed as “the greatest footballing competition in the world”, has been very disappointing. The first round of matches produced the fewest goals in history, and my own team (England) decided to pick a goal keeper who was highly skilled at dropping the ball in his own goal. Not a good start…

Thankfully, in the world of Top7 ranking, things have been going much better! Our Facebook App has been causing mayhem amongst fans, and we now have 7 topics up and running, and people are ranking like crazy. Over 700 rankers have helped to crown Spain the favorites to lift the World Cup. France didn’t even make it into the Top7, so it seems like our rankers are wise people!

In other news, Cristiano Ronaldo topped the charts for the player you thought would be the top scorer (although the Portuguese winger is yet to find the net!). There is also a battle going on between  Maradona and Pele, to decide who is the greatest player of all time, and who scored the greatest World Cup Goal of all time (some GREAT videos on that topic!).

For those who enjoy the more beautiful aspects of football, we are running two polls to see who you think the hottest footballer is…. and who’s the best looking wife or girlfriend. I was unsuccessful in getting them to add a topic for the most attractive dog.

Watch this space for new topic and updates, but for now, just ask yourself one question. What’s your 7?

5 Reasons why humans love the World Cup!

June 1, 2010, by Bojan

Its official. The humans have gone mad.

For the last few weeks the humans in the office have increased their fascination with kicking spherical objects to almost bizarre levels. Now don’t get me wrong, I enjoy chasing a ball around as much as the next dog. It’s a fun activity, make no mistake, but for some humans it has become an obsession. In no less than two weeks, hundreds of thousands of humans will fly from all corners of the globe, to a country many of them have never visited before, in order to watch other humans chase a ball. They will be joined by millions of television viewers worldwide, who tune in to watch exciting footage of people chasing a ball. Ambassadors, Presidents, Kings and Queens will all make public appearances, approving the fact that other people are currently chasing a ball. Passions will rage, debates will be sparked, and violence will break out, as humans from one country infuriate each other, by claiming that they know how to chase a ball better than humans from another country. And they say Dogs are mad….!!!

At Top7 we have made our own contribution to the World Cup, by creating a Facebook application to rank your favorite World Cup teams, and players you think we be top scorers. You can access this by clicking on the pictures below…

Whilst I am privileged to have a more developed brain than my unfortunate human masters, I do none the less appreciate the simple pleasure they find in this ball chasing competition (or “World Cup” as they call it). You see, the World Cup does tap into some of the most natural and primitive instincts. So primitive, that even a Dog can appreciate them. So please enjoy: 5 reasons why humans love the World Cup:

1) National Pride: In a world of political correctness, open borders and multiculturalism, man’s “tribal” urges have to find another form. The World Cup provides a unique outlet for humans to sing, shout and dance about their nation being the greatest. If Obama were to stand up in the UN and say that he hopes the USA gives North Korea a good beating it would cause an international scandal! But if he shouts his support from the football stands, its quite ok….

2) Teamwork: Humans feel disconnected from each other. They don’t form the hunting packs that us dogs love. This is why social networks like Facebook have been so popular – they aim to rebuild these connections. But the World Cup is a far more powerful way. Seeing 11 men work their guts out for each other, and physically put themselves on the line, reminds humans of what they all know deep down – we are stronger when we work together as a unit.

3) The Gladiator Affect: Humans have always loved to watch a bit of a fight. It’s true, they no longer get people to fight to the death like they did in Roman times, but certainly passion, fights and acts of violence only add to the World Cup’s attraction. Who can possibly say they didn’t get a thrill watching, and re-watching, as Zinedine Zidane headbutted Materazzi?

4) Glamour: Secretly, every human craves one thing; The respect of other humans. It doesn’t really make a difference why they are respected, it could be for something as silly as…chasing a ball! Seeing England up in arms when Rooney steps on the pitch, or hundreds of thousands of men (and women) screaming and crying when Ronaldo scores a goal – it reminds the human’s of the dream they are chasing. And for a moment, it lets them taste that ecstasy…

5) World Cup Fever: A lot of humans enjoy the World Cup, even though they don’t like football! There is simply something lovely about leaving work a bit early, sitting outside by a big screen, or in a local pub or bar, and watching a game. Regardless of the football, the World Cup is just a great way to relax, and socialize.
