Did Forlan deserve the Golden Ball?
So our romance with the World Cup is over for another 4 years. As one of my friends put it, she has been a reliable, if somewhat disappointing lover.
Brazil and Argentina gave us glimpses of what they were capable of, but couldn’t convert flair into wins. Spain emerged as worthy Champions from a committed, but slightly uninspiring final, which saw a record number of yellow cards given out, and two hours without a goal…
And then there were some moments of magic.
Forlan’s strike against Holland was memorable, as was Van Bronckhorst’s before it. Louis Fabiano scored some of Brazil’s trademark samba goals before his team got knocked out, and David Villa, Iniesta and Xavi played with their opponents like a cat plays with a mouse before pouncing. But who was the best?
FIFA have officially crowned Forlan as Player of the Tournament, by awarding him the “Golden Ball” – but we wonder if the people would make a different choice.
